The Early Renaissance of fifteenth-century Italy was a period of experimentation and rapid cultural progress. However much this may have been due to a revival of interest in ancient literature and art, one thing is certain: man was fired by a new vision of his capability and was tireless in his striving toward attainment. By the end of the century, when the earliest picture discussed in this booklet (page 13) was painted, the chief technical advances had already been made.
